The Rocky Gem Story
My name is Jose Nunes, the owner of Rocky Gem, and dogs love me! Well, most dogs…
I had one dog who I could not win over, no matter how much affection I bestowed on him. His name was Rocky, and he was a complex and interesting canine. Like the gemstones on this site, he was truly individual – a gem of a dog.
I have loved gemstones all my life and, while I’m always learning more about them, I have met some wonderful people who have accumulated a lifetime of knowledge about gemstones. These people are the fabric of Rocky Gem. I will be telling many colorful stories about these people and the exquisitely beautiful gems you will see on my site.
First, about me…I’m Brazilian by birth and a citizen of the world by nature. For the past 12 years I have lived in the USA, but for many years I have been collecting special gems from around the world. Now it is time to sell.
Most of these gemstones have been certified by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and, where possible, the certification is attached. Some of the gems and specimens do not need certification, as there is no doubt about their authenticity. Where this is the case, you can read about their story.
The experts behind this collection are true friends, who also happen to be business leaders in the gemstone industry:
- Peter Blythe from Mineshaft in Canberra, Australia. Peter was an opal miner, cutter and classer in Mintabie, South Australia.
- Terry Coldham, who until recently was the largest gemstone wholesaler in Australia. Terry now runs an exclusive, boutique-style gemstone carving business in Bali.
- Another Peter, who is head of the largest Hong Kong-based opal cutting dealership in the world.
- David, whom I met in a kibbutz in Israel in 1975. David now lives in Kenya and deals in only the best gems, cut and rough.
These people are typical of the expert help and guidance I have been fortunate enough to gather around me. They have patiently supplied their expertise in my search for special gems, and it is this expertise that allows me to be confident in the quality and history of the stones on my site.
Enjoy the stones and the stories, and thank you for visiting Rocky Gem!
