Transparent Green Tsavorite Grossular Garnet – 4.36 carat
This is a very high quality grossular garnet. It is a large and beautiful transparent green tsavorite from the Tsavo region in Kenya. The rough stone was hand picked by my friend David and then given to his best cutters to transform into a large tsavorite to admire and remember.
Grossular is a calcium-aluminium species of the garnet group of minerals. It has the chemical formula of Ca3Al2(SiO4)3 but the calcium may, in part, be replaced by ferrous iron and the aluminium by ferric iron.
Tsavorite is composed of calcium aluminium silicate. Large tsavorites are extremely rare. It is estimated that 85% of the material mined yields gems under 1 carat, 10% yields stones above one carat, 2.5% yields stones over two carats and approximately 1% yields stones over 3 carats. So at 4.36 carats this is a very rare and desirable stone.
